The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
The 5 Second Rule is a straightforward strategy to creating a new habit in the fight against your procrastination.
Mel Robbins an American CNN commentator and motivational speaker who started her career as a criminal defence attorney. I first ‘discovered’ her when she was a contributing editor to the SUCCESS Magazine. She is well sought after keynote speaker, racking up 13 million views on her TEDx talks!
There is only one rule she espouses when it comes to productivity, success and creating the life you desire, and that is ‘you are never going to feel like it, ever…EVER’
The moment you have the thought to do something you only have 5 seconds to act before your brain talks you out of action. This little countdown is designed to suppress the hesitation that is in all of us and ‘push’ us forward.
A simple decision-making tool that can help you overcome a negative cycle of behaviour and create new and better habits for yourself. One example, Robbins used the 5 second to stop avoiding exercise and push herself to take regular jogs. The principle of the 5-second rule stems from the concept known as the locus of control which is described as ‘The extent to which people believe they have power over events in their lives. A person with an internal locus of control believes that he or she can influence events and their outcomes, while someone with an external locus of control blames outside forces for everything.’
Robbin’s book will guide you to start asserting control over your destiny and create opportunities for yourself by unlocking your inner courageous side. Even the most talented sometimes need the push to get on the right track. By changing the way we make decisions and the compounding effect, simple acts can add up to help redefine who you are, how you feel and what you choose to do with your life.
